New data manager for WoRMS: Leen Vandepitte

The Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) has appointed Leen Vandepitte as the new data manager for WoRMS.

Leen is a biologist with a lot of experience in biological data management. In the VLIZ data centre, she is also responsable for the management of EurOBIS. Wim Decock (biologist) and Bart Vanhoorne (IT specialist) will of course continue to serve in the data management team for WoRMS. [Read more]
PRESS RELEASE: Flanders invests in European research infrastructures

On Tuesday 8 May 2012, the Flemish Minister of Innovation Ingrid Lieten launched four Flemish projects of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure (ESFRI). As such the Flemish government engaged to contribute to these European initiatives to set up joint research infrastructures. The Minister reserved, in the framework of the Flemish innovation policy, for this purpose 3.5 million EUR. VLIZ will actively participate in two of these ESFRI projects, namely ICOS and LifeWatch. [Read more]

World List of Lophogastrida, Stygiomysida and Mysida launched ('Mysidacea')

The peracarid crustacean orders Mysida, Lophogastrida and Stygiomysida were formerly grouped under the name "Mysidacea". Although the treatment in three separate orders is now accepted, we have chosen to present mysids, lophogastrids and stygiomysids in the same web interface. The higher classification (orders, families, subfamilies) follows Meland & Willassen (2007), and the fossil order of Pygocephalomorpha is also included in the database.

World Modern Foraminifera Database launched

The World Modern Foraminifera Database currently contains roughly 10,000 names, including 6,700 accepted species. It also contains 1,100 references and around 2,700 images of species.

The portal of PESI (Pan-European Species directories Infrastructure) has been launched: www.eu-nomen.eu/portal and is available in 21 European languages. With time, it will be possible to find and search through the information of all species appearing in Europe. Not only the species living in seas and oceans, but also of all terrestrial and aquatic species. On Friday 11 March Japan was hit by a massive earthquake, with the epicentre lying approximately 130km offshore the northeast coast. Promptly a tsunami ánd tsunami alert followed. 'Marine Knowledge 2020': EU invests in knowledge on the sea

To underpin and implement the integrated European Maritime Policy, including the Framework Marine Strategy, all available knowledge have to be combined and mobilized. Europe's fragmented activities for observing the sea should be integrated into an coherent package. With its new campaign 'Marine Knowledge 2020' the EU want to draw the attention to the further extension of a 'European Observation and Data Netwerk (EMODnet)'.
