Questions about the sea and the coast? Questions on marine and coast-related research in Flanders? The Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) will doubtless be able to help your ‘contact for marine and coastal affairs’.

We help you on the basis of our own expertise or via our close contacts with over 500 marine and coastal scientists in Flanders or with the international community.

You can always call (Phone: ++ 32 (0)59 34 21 30) or mail us or browse this website for information when you are looking for:

• ‘real-time’ monitoring of weather, tide and waves off the Belgian coast
• contact addresses of marine experts (through the IMIS database of experts)
• valuable maps, statistics and other sea data
• over 100 interesting questions and answers
• the etymological and historical explanation of sea related terms (in Dutch)
• any publication on marine or coastal topics (refer to the marine library)
• pictures and films on the North Sea and the Belgian coast and their uses

As marine and coastal sciences in the broadest sense constitute the daily scope of work of the VLIZ, we dare to say that we also have a good understanding of the marine scientific and political ‘landscape’ of Belgium. So we’re always in for a chat!

You can furthermore keep yourself perfectly abreast of marine affairs by taking out a free subscription to the digital marine magazine ‘VLIZINE’ or to the information magazine about the Flemish coast ‘De Grote Rede’ (both in Dutch)
