Annual Report

The screening of the VLIZ activities in 2004 - preceding the new VLIZ management agreement for the period 2005-2009 - induced us to a new communication strategy. It included: the suspension of the VLIZ Newsletter after the publishing 15 issues, the investment of more resources in the VLIZ website and the journal for the general public 'De Grote Rede', and the publishing of an annual activity report.

The annual report 2011 of the Flanders Marine Institute gives an overview of our activities in the calendar year 2011. A year where we especially will recall the construction of the Simon Stevin, many communication actions around the effects of climate change in the seas and oceans, the recognition of the VLIZ as ICSU data centre and the startup of the Compendium for coast and sea. At the last minute of 2011 the Flemish Government decided on 23 December 2011 to enter into a new covenant with VLIZ for the period 2012-2016. VLIZ is ready for a new start... The Annual Report informs on the activities and projects by each of the VLIZ departments in 2010; a year that was characterised by several succesfull cross-departmental activities, like the communication campaign and data management within the frame of the International Year of the Biodiversity and the Belgian presidency of the Council of the European Union. Every opportunity was good for us to give the seas and oceans, and marine sciences in particular, the attention they deserve. The highlight of 2010 was the EurOCEAN 2010 conference in Ostend. Its final statement, the "Ostend Declaration" will undoubtedly continue for many years and inspire the shaping of marine sciences in Flanders and Europe. In the Annual Report 2009 onz can find the comprehensive record of our activities in the past year; this for each of the departments seperately. To remember for 2009 is the external audit that turned out to be very positive. In the appendices of the Annual report 2009 the evaluation of the 2005-2009 management agreement is summarised. The celebration of 10 years VLIZ dominated our operation in autumn 2009 and was primarily conceived as a feast for the marien sciences in general and the marine science community in Flanders and Belgium. This publication gives a colourful and well-illustrated account of the operation of the VLIZ druing the calender year 2008. It was the year in which the additional investment subsidy for 2008-2009 was approved. The subsidy allows the purchase and renovation of additional land-based facilities on the East Bank in Oostende, the purchase research equipment for the new research vessel Simon Stevin and the renovation of the offices at Wandelaarkaai. 2008 will also be remembered as the year in which the secretariat of the Marine Board of the European Science Foundation (ESF) moved to Oostende. The VLIZ Annual Report 2007 (now also available in English!) lists the results achieved in the financial year 2007. With a number of eye-cathers we try to highlight the most important climax moments of the year, for each of the departments. New from this year on, is that the VLIZ Collected Reprints are an integral part of the Annual Report - as an enclosed CDrom. The Collected Reprints 37 gives an overview of the scientific output of the marine scientific community in Flanders in 2007.
