Series of posters ‘Life in the sea’: Fauna and flora at the Belgische coast

The most frequent encountered species of a certain habitat of the Belgian coast together on one educational poster. The species are named in 4 languages. All posters together can be used in combination with the educational package 'Classification' (in Dutch; free to download). Second grade students can work with the package in the biology class to learnabout taxonomy, affinity, homologous and analogous structures etc.

1. Series of posters of the most frequent species


On the posters ons can find the 30 most frequent or striking species of a certain habitat present at the Belgian coast or at sea. With high quality pictures by the nature photographer Misjel Decleer. The selection of the most common species and the identification (scientific name and common names in 4 languages) is done by scientific experts.

  • The posters (A1 - ca. 60x89 cm) can be picked up at production cost (3 EUR/piece) at the VLIZ in Ostend.

    2. Educational package 'Classification'

    In the educational package 'Classification' (for second grade Biology) pupils get acquainted in 7 lessons with the principles of classification. The work with the organisms of the Belgisch marine and coastal fauna and flora. By making a classification scheme, they learn about higher taxonomy, affiliation, homologous and analogous structures etc.

    The educational package is only available in Dutch. It can ve freely freely downloaded as a .zip file . It consists of the following files:

  • The educational package was developed by Michiel Smits (biology teacher second grade), in cooperation with VLIZ.


    The posters are worked out within the frame of
    the action plan 'Science Information & Innovation'
    with the support of the gouvernment of Flanders.
