PRESS RELEASE: World first from Ostend dusted off
Added on: 2010-06-23 10:36:50 | | In 1843 professor Pierre-Joseph van Beneden from Leuven installed the world’s very first marine research station in Ostend. In doing so the Belgian professor was ahead of his time and of a wave of similar stations elsewhere in Europe and the world, and would lay the foundation of a long tradition of marine institutes in Ostend. A meticulous study of historical source material now also shows the exact location of this Belgian world first, which has since disappeared. This fact is celebrated on 25 June with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the façade of VLIZ and some explanation on the occasion of the launch of the ‘Zeekrant 2010’ newsletter. ... VLIZ celebrates its 10th birthday!
Added on: 2009-11-06 12:50:26 | | By the end of November we have a big celebration in Oostende! The Flanders Marine Institute celebrates its 10 year anniversary with a two-day event in Thermae Palace. On Thursday 26 November there is a full evening's programme on the coast and sea for the public at large (in Dutch - BOOKED UP). During the day on Friday 27 November we organise the 10th VLIZ Young Marine Scientists' Day: a must for all marine researchers in Flanders and surroundings! That night an academic ceremony is closing off the festivities (only for invited guests; in Dutch). [Read more] |

Joint IAMSLIC - EURASLIC Conference ends in Brugge
Added on: 2009-10-05 15:55:55 | | The joint 35th Annual IAMSLIC (International Association of Aquatic and Marine Sciences Libraries and Information Centers) Conference and 13th Biennial EURASLIC (European Association of Aquatic Sciences Libraries and Information Centres) Conference was held in Brugge, Belgium between 27 September and 1 October 2009.
