Our catalogue offers several sophisticated search procedures. To profit maximally from our library search interface (IMIS), we guide you through the possibilities:
- In all fields one can search by using the Boolean operators & (AND) and | (OR). In a standard way, the interspace is replaced by the & (AND) operator. One can also use a quotation mark to search for a string of words.
Sea & coast : all records containing both ‘sea’ and ‘coast’
Sea | coast: all records containing ‘sea’ or ‘coast’
"sea and coast": all records containing exactly this combinations of words
- One can also search for parts of words.
Ocean% : Ocean% : all records containing this string of characters, e.g. ocean, oceans, oceanography, oceanic, etc.
%bmarine ground%: all records containing this exact combinations of characters, e.g. submarine groundwater, submarine grounded, submarine seepage of fresh groundwater, etc.
- · One can combine both techniques.
"%bmarine ground%": all records containing exactly this combination of characters, e.g. submarine groundwater, but NOT submarine seepage or fresh groundwater.
- Searching for Author
Here one can also use the % operator.
%cain : gives you all publications of authors like Cain, Caine, Mccain, Buscaino, etc.
Do you want to search for publications of 2 or more authors? Use a & (AND)
Van% & mees : gives you all publications by Vanaverbeke and Mees, or by Mees and Vanhove, or by Arvanitidis and Mees, etc.
- Searching for Acquisition Date
Allow you to search for records that are entered into our catalogue before, after or on a specific date.
- Searching for Special Collection
Selecting one of our ‘Special Collections’ gives you a list of all records on this specific subject:
"Spuikom Oostende (Belgium)" gives a list off all publications of this brackish Sluice Dock in Ostend, Belgium.
- Searching for Thesaurus term
- Searching for Taxonomic term
- Searching for Geographic term
By clicking on the ‘list’ right of these fields, you get an overview of the keywords used in our catalogue. Here one can also use the &, | and % operators.
"Archipelagoes" (from the Thesaurus list) gives all records containing this keyword
"Nemertina" (from the Taxonomic list) gives all records containing this keyword
