EMSEA 2015: for more Ocean Literacy in education

Marine scientists, ocean policymakers, marine science educators and teachers are invited to the European Marine Science Educators Association (EMSEA) Conference in Crete from 28 September to 1 October 2015. Explore and discuss the development of Ocean Literacy in Europe and how Ocean Literacy is being used within formal/informal education. Listen to the keynote speakers Pierre-Yves Cousteau and Dr Kaiti Siakavara and participate in four excellent workshops about: marine science communication, embedding Ocean Literacy in the core curriculum for 5-14 years old, using a mobile app addressing marine litter and how to use storytelling to encourage engagement in ocean science.

Since the first EMSEA conference in 2012 on Ocean Literacy in Bruges (Belgium), it is time to evaluate the impact of actions, projects and activities that have taken place, and to focus on ‘the way forward’ for Ocean Literacy in Europe (and beyond). Both will be discussed for either formal (schools) or informal education (aquariums, ecotourism, commercial ocean enterprises or companies that are responsible for children’s books, learning materials...).

Venue: Cretaquarium, Heraklion, Crete

Dates: 28 September – 1 October 2015

Organizers: Hellenic Centre for Marine Research

Co-organization: Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), the University of Gothenburg and the Marine Biological Association (MBA)
