Abstract
A review of the port of Antwerp is given for 1984. Figures are given for shipping traffic, cargo tonnages and TEU's. Expansion of the port and improvements include dredging of the Western Scheldt, construction of the Berendrecht Lock, extension of a radar system, modernisation of the central dock area and further expansion of the port on the left bank of the Scheldt has been approved. Infrastructure developments include widening of the Albert Canal, modernisation of the Antwerp North marshalling yard, and new bridges for road transport. Companies have invested in new equipment and expanded their fleets of vehicles, and investment programmes are quoted for several companies in Antwerp as a result of industrial activity. Mention is also made of the promotion of Antwerp at its open days to attract attention to the port.
