Platform for marine research

Communication division

The Communication division aims to share knowledge with people fascinated by the sea. We try to achieve this objective by disclosing high-quality marine information to very diverse target groups (young & old, professionals & the general public, local & international, research & education) and in different formats.

The Communication division watches over the implementation of a consistent and high-impact VLIZ communication strategy on the basis of a Communication Plan (2012-2015). In addition, the Communication division aims to make reliable marine and coastal research visible in Flanders and beyond. This is done through the VLIZ Info Desk, the production of publications, the (co-)organisation of events, the development of educational tools and multimedia, and contacts with the press.

Responsibilities:

  • Publication of the four-monthly magazine De Grote Rede, the free information magazine on the sea and coast, for nearly all sections of the population (circulation of 7 500 copies).
  • Coordination of and daily dissemination of information through the VLIZ website as well as the digital newsletter VLIZINE.
  • Annual publication of the Zeekrant for the general public (circulation of 75 000 copies) and the VLIZ annual report.
  • Ad hoc development of, or contribution to, various books, reports, etc.
  • The (co-)organisation – in association with the Coordination division – of dozens of events (symposia, meetings, workshops, seminars, press conferences, etc.) each year, including the 'VLIZ Marine Science Day' and an action within the scope of World Oceans Day.
  • Participation in public events with a VLIZ stand (Science Day, Ostend at Anchor, etc.).
  • Responding to requests for marine information and taking care of explanatory presentations for the public at large (VLIZ Info Desk).
  • Specific communication concerning the operation of RV Simon Stevin, ROV Genesis and the Ostend Marine Station.
  • Providing targeted information and support to education and guide associations through the organisation of seminars and workshops, the production of teaching materials and the development of innovative learning platforms (Planet Ocean).
  • Contributing nationally and internationally to better and creative marine communication and education (incl. Ocean Literacy, new media and creative VLIZ projects).
  • Taking care of contacts with the press including spokesmanship.
  • Watching over the corporate identity and a consistent VLIZ branding.
