20 years VLIZ - Academic Session: VLIZ breaks boundaries

The idea of establishing a Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) arose in 1997. The aim was to create a clearly identifiable focal point in Flanders, increasing the visibility of marine scientific research, both regionally and at an international level. Thanks to the financial support of the Government of Flanders and the Province of West Flanders, VLIZ started its activities two years later, on 1 October 1999. Now, twenty years later, this VLIZ anniversary will be celebrated with an event on 28 November 2019. The ceremony – an academic session with the central theme VLIZ breaks boundaries – will take place in the Versluys Arena in Ostend, Belgium.
