Description:
Back in November 2005, we organised the first CONSENSUS workshop in Oostende, where more than 100 stakeholders from 16 countries gathered to define desired trends and indicators for the sustainable development of European aquaculture. Those indicators have since been incorporated in important initiatives by European aquaculture professional organisations and the CONSENSUS initiative has been widely acclaimed for its stakeholder approach in furthering sustainable aquaculture at a European level.

As the initiative draws to a close, a final workshop was organised to update participants on the utilisation of the indicators that stakeholders developed at that workshop and to take part in discussions on building on the momentum that CONSENSUS has created.

CONSENSUS has also developed balanced information for consumers, showing the benefits of sustainable European aquaculture and its products, with the firm message that aquaculture is the only way to fill the gap between supply and demand for seafood. Consumer issues were an important part of this final stakeholders’ meeting.

The meeting took place at the Thermae Palace Hotel in Oostende (Belgium), where 127 participants from 19 countries enjoyed excellent facilities and hospitality. A mix of presentations and lengthy discussion enabled a wide range of stakeholder views to be shared.
