Dataset on the larval ecology of Thunnus thynnus in Balearic waters. more
This research program, projects TUNIBAL I and II, focuses on the larval ecology of Tuna in the waters of the Balearic, one of the main spawning areas of the Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus. They are framed, first as internal at the IEO then as national R+D, in a project to assess the influence of environmental factors on the reproductive strategy and evolution of the Bluefin tuna larvae (Thunnus thynnus L. 1758) and related species. 5 campaigns took place on board of the RV's Vizconde de Eza (2001-2002) and Cornide de Saavedra (2003-2005). All samples were taken in June and July. About 200 stations were sampled covering the entire Balearic area. At all stations a profile was registered by CTD with data of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, fluorescence and turbidity. Water samples were taken to determine chlorophyll and nutrients. In each station different microzooplancton catches were done: vertical and double diagonal (from a depth of 70m to the surface) as well as horizontal using different net types and mesh sizes. In addition, during the 2004 survey an estimation of gelatinous plankton contribution was also made.
