Records of birds encountered during ESAS surveys in NE Atlantic from 1980 to 2003. more

The purpose of this data capture was to record location and abundances of bird species in the NE Atlantic.

Data was collected during ship and aircraft based surveys, using the ESAS full strip transect method with snapshot method for flying birds and scan data.

Data was recorded by research institutions, universities and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC).

Some biological records have more precise location information than others. Often they are recorded using national grid references, which identify which 50km, 10km, 2km, 1km or 100m square they occur in. For this dataset, all records (264441) are at the 100m resolution.

Often the actual day on which records were made is not known precisely. However, they may be known to be within a particular month or year. For all records in this dataset, the date precision is "day".
