Abstract:
The structure of microbial communities and the functional relationships between their members have a major impact on energy and nutrient flows in ecosystems. The Department of Microbial Wetland Ecology is studying the structure and function of two types of community in eutrophic shallow lakes and lowland rivers: benthic communities of nitrifying bacteria, and pelagic communities of cyanobacteria and associated heterotrophic bacteria, protozoa and viruses. We are looking at these communities in both the laboratory and their natural environment. Studies in the natural environment are facilitated by the application of molecular markers and other advanced techniques.
