Abstract
Carbon-14 uptake, plant pigments, ATP, POC, numbers, the ratio of full to empty cells, and species of phytoplankters and standard hydrographic parameters were determined as a function of hydrocarbon concentrations in the vicinity of underwater "flaring" the venting of noncommercial quantities gases separated from liquid petroleum on offshore petroleum production platforms. Although there were significant covariances between hydrocarbon concentrations and several biomass parameters, the variability was apparently due to upwelling, induced by the rapidly rising jet of gaseous hydrocarbons.
