Abstract
    Larvae of the mud crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii were exposed continuously during development to polychlorinated biphenyls (Aroclor 1016), polychlorinated naphthalenes (Halowax 1000 and 1099), or phthalate ester plasticizers (dimethylphthalate and dibutylphthalate). Concentrations of 80 ppb Aroclor 1016 and 100 ppb Halowax 1099 were acutely toxic to the larvae. Halowax 1000 at a concentration of 300 ppb was chronically toxic. Acute and chronic larval mortality was not statistically significantly different from that of controls at phthalate concentrations up to 1000 ppb. However, the developmental rate of larvae exposed to low concentrations of dimethylphthalate was increased, while the development of larvae exposed to high concentrations was retarded in comparison with the controls. The larvae showed several sublethal responses to exposure to the three chlorinated hydrocarbons. These responses included an increase in the developmental time to the megalops, decreased megalopal size, and an increased incidence of supernumerary zoeae and other developmental abnormalities.
