Abstract
    The paper comprises an outline of the problem of the Flemish banks and discusses the recent technical and scientific developments. The author presents two morphogenetic models for sandbanks. The global mobility model forms a synthetic elaboration of several existing partial models. The overall stability model is based on new data. It puts forward a long term position stability of the bank comprising medium term oscillations around an equilibrium position and its advances a bank genesis commanded by the preholocene fluvial morphology and by a gradual impact of a maintenance mechanism, providing the continuity of the bank. It is based on a series of 13 campaigns at sea during 1982-83 showing the existence, the process and the significance of the maintenance mechanism. The results have been elaborated by visual and volumetric comparisons of accurate sequential depth profiles sailed along reference tracks , by bottom sampling and sedimentological analysis, by side scan sonar recordings, by acoustic subbottom profiling and by Rokleng drillings. For navigation and positioning one used Decca and Toran and high frequency fixings have been elaborated by an own computer assisted cartography.
