Abstract
    The measurement of changes in the physiological responses of individual organisms should form an important component of any toxicological or envionmental monitoring programme, offering many advantages over measurements made at other levels of biological organization. Physiological responses are capable of quantifying an organism's condition (state variables such as growth) and the efficiency with which it functions (such as growth efficiency) under conditions of environmental stress and pollution.
