Abstract
The aim of the research was to assess the fluxes of pesticides, and their effects, from the river Scheldt into the North Sea. Three goals were formulated: to develop analytical procedures capable of measuring ultra-trace levels of pesticides, i.e. at or below the 1 ng/l level, in river, estuarine, and sea water; to determine the amounts of pesticides transported by the river Scheldt into the Scheldt estuary and finally into the North Sea; to assess the ecotoxicological effects of pesticides in this marine environment.
