Abstract
Description of a new computer-aided system called HOSDES for the conceptuel design of ships. This system is being developed by MARIN with financial support from the Royal Netherlands Navy, the Royal Shipyards 'De Schelde' and the Netherlands Naval Ship Design Bureaus. This has some unique features with respect to the software implemented in the user-interface system, allowing for true multitasking capabilities and advanced data communication. An integrated relational database system (MIMER) has been adopted to allow for an efficient manipulation of data. A special system management subsystem has been incorporated for the purpose of managing projects and users, and to introduce levels of priority and confidentiality in accessing and manipulating data. A special design- guidance subsystem has been including for providing special assist tools to the user.
