Abstract
The interest in the optimal maintenance of existing hydraulic structures is growing and efforts are made to develop a theoretical basis for the planning of maintenance. In hydraulic engineering preventive maintenance is applied in most cases, because of the large consequences of failure. Therefore, inspection and repair play an important role. Minimizing the present value of the sum of failure costs, inspection and repair costs lead to an optimal maintenance scheme. As an example, inspection of the bed protection of the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier in the Netherlands was optimized.
