Abstract |
The Valencia Trough is an aborted rift formed before the early Miocene opening of the Western Mediterranean sea. Its formation is linked to the opening of the Provencal basin, but also to the formation of the Betic-riff domain. We present a study of the structure and sedimentary history of the trough based on the VALSIS cruise seismic data, supplemented by several industrial lines, and the numerous wells of the Iberian margin. This structural study reveals an asymmetry of the margins, few superficial extensional features, the existence of several transverse structures trending N130 degree which segment the basin in different blocks, a widespread volcanism which conceals a part of the deep structures of the basin. This volcanism is differentiated into two types different in age and nature. The first one, characterized by calk-alkaline late Oligocene to middle Miocene volcanic rocks, is compared to the northwestern Mediterranean calk-alkaline volcanism. The second one is alkaline and recent. A schematic initial fit shows that the whole volcanism of the region is related to the formation of marginal basins behind an African subduction zone. A simple-shear model is presented. |
