    MFSTEP aims to consolidation and further expansion of a Mediterranean marine forecasting system based upon the elements implemented during the EU Project MFSPP (Mediterranean Forecasting System Pilot Project-MAS3-CT98-0171). The goal is to advance the monitoring technology to achieve maximum reliability of the observing system, to demonstrate the practical feasibility of regional scale forecasting in several Mediterranean areas, to develop biochemical modelling and data assimilation toward environmental predictions and to start the development of end-users interfaces for the exploitation of the project products. OBJ1. Improve and expand the existing Near Real Time large scale monitoring system;OBJ2. Add new observing system components in terms of biochemical measurements and new automated technology;OBJ3. Improve the 10 days basin scale forecast system (6.5 km resolution) and demonstrate the feasibility of Near Real Time three days forecasts in different regions (3 km resolution);OBJ4. Develop the asynchronous ocean-atmosphere coupling with high resolution atmospheric forcing over regional and shelf areas;OBJ5. Implement the three dimensional ecosystem models coupled to the forecasting system for future predictions of biochemical elements variability;OBJ6. Consolidate the dissemination of forecasts to a wide user community and develop applications with end-users.
