Abstract
Of a total of 41 myctophids described by Taning, only 14 are represented by holotypes. For 2 of the remaining 27 spp, namely Taaningichthys bathyphilus and Loweina interrupta, lectotypes have been designated by Bolin (1959) and Wisner respectively. Lack of adequate and accurate sp descriptions, so evident in earlier works, has often been the cause of confusion and frustration among students of the extraordinarily speciose family Myctophidae. Hence a detailed account of the myctophids desscribed by Taning is given, designating lectotypes wherever necessary. In a number of cases, the taxonomic status of the forms involved is adjusted according to the present knowledge of the family Myctophidae. The material is deposited in the Zool. Mus., Univ. of Copenhagen (ZMUC), Denmark.
