Abstract
Results of two surveys carried out at Cienfuegos Bay, in August and November, 1979, with the objective of studying the meiobenthic communities and their relationship with some ecological factors, are presented. After subjecting the results of the August survey to a discriminant function analysis, the bay was divided into three ecological areas: the zones near the rivers' mouths, and the northeastern and southwestern portions. Discriminant functions for each one of the three areas are presented, and factors influencing the meiofaunal characteristics are discussed. The poorest zones of the meiofauna were the low consolidated clay muddy bottoms, which showed the highest organic contents, as well as a high deficit of oxygen and the expulsion of hydrogen sulphide; the richest ones were the bottoms with a certain percentage of sand, which showed low organic values, high values for dissolved oxygen, and low ones for hydrogen sulphide.
