Abstract
    As part of the biological characterization of the Cuban shelf, four investigation cruises were made to Zone A (southeastern region) and adjacent oceanic waters, in the months of August, 1972, and February, April, and June-July, 1973. Concentrations of eggs and larvae in each station were calculated, as well as the productivity of the area for each period. Summer resulted in the most productive epoch and also the one with the largest capture of larvae, followed by winter and lastly by spring. The oceanic waters were in general poorer than those of the shelf, although the larvae capture was not low at all and the diversity of families was larger. The most frequent families at the shelf during the summer months were Clupeidae, Gerreidae, Sparidae, and Carangidae; and in winter and spring, Engraulidae, Serranidae, and Gobiidae. At the oceanic stations the most abundant families were Myctophidae, Stomiatidae, Sternoptychidae.
