Abstract
An analysis was made of the qualitative, quantitative, and biomass results of the study of the phytoplankton obtained in three cruises carried out in different climatic periods to the NW region of the Cuban shelf and adjacent waters. One hundred and seventy two species of microalgae were identified. Diatoms and dinoflagellates predominate in the area. The concentration of phytoplanktonic organisms varied between 0,44 and 103,2 x 106 cells/m3). Values for the biomas were under 500 mg/m3. The biological factors of the environment are related with the physical and chemical ones, and a comparison is made with the rest of the regions of the shelf and other tropical areas. A list of the species and their characteristic diameter is also supplied.
