Abstract
    The purpose of this study was determine the acute effect of 4 heavy metals (As, Cd, Hg and Ag) on survival of juvenile A. irradians after 96 hrs of exposure, as well as tissue uptake of these metals. Changes in O2 consumption rates were also determined in juveniles exposed to the estimated LC5 and LC25 values of Ag and Cd. Ag and Hg were found to be the most toxic, Ag being 95% toxic at 0.086 ppm and Hg at 0.150 ppm. Cd was relatively toxic, 95% mortality occurred at 2.33 ppm while As was relatively non-toxic requiring concns of 5.41 for 95% mortality. All of the metals tested were accumulated in significant amounts, Ag, Hg and As being taken up more rapidly than Cd.
