Abstract |
The many problems involved in the rapidly increased demand for unconventional offshore structures, both floating and fixed to the bottom, requires new and special adapted design methods. In combination with theoretical studies for the determination of mathematical models to describe the behaviour of a particular object, model tests may play an important role. They are a useful tool for studying the feasibility and the workability of the structure or for improving the system. Also data required for the structural design of the ultimately chosen system may be obtained from modeltests. Due to the irregular character of waves and weather conditions, the behaviour of offshore structures has to be treated in a statistical way. The statistical interpretation of model tests both conducted in regular and irregular waves, and the extrapolation of the results to long term weather conditions, will be dealt with in this paper. |
