Abstract |
The structure and composition of the tunics of 2 phlebobranch ascidians, Ascidiella aspersa and Phallusia mammillata have been investigated by means of histochemical and extraction techniques. As well as a high percentage of water, acidic polysaccharides, neutral polysaccharides and proteins have been detected. The distribution and proportions of these 3 constituents differ from one sp to another. No chitin was detectable. The neutral polysaccharide representing the so-called tunicin, amounted to less than 40 percent of the crude dry weight. It is concluded that the tunic of phlebobranch tunicates has no uniformity of structure and composition as is generally accepted. |
