Abstract |
The brown alga Sargassum muticum appeared on the French coasts thirteen years ago. In the framework of a National Programme different investigations have been undertaken on this seaweed. In Basse-Normandie distribution maps of the alga along the coast were drawn up: there are five important populations located on wide, flat, relatively sheltered shores with large ponds at low tide. The estimated biomass of this alga in Basse-Normandie amounts to 19 000 tons during its full development season. The evolution of three populations were studied over a year and differences were found to exist between the stations. The introduction and development of S. muticum along the coast of Basse-Normandie seem to have little effect on the environment. Only two species have suffered from the competition with this seaweed: Laminaria saccharina which has practically disappeared on the coast at Grandcamp, and Zostera marina which has been supplanted by S. muticum in parts of the beds injured by human activities. |
