Abstract
The formation of adventitious proliferations in seaweeds was studied in four marineChilean seaweeds. Fragments of Gymnogongrus furcellatus, Schottera nicaeensis,Ceramium rubrum and Rhodymenia sp. collected in the Coliumo Bay (36 degree31'S, 75 degree 57'W), Chile, in April 1995, were selected and incubated in acultive chamber, at 18 /6 h L/D, and 15 degree C+-1.5 degree C for thirty days.G. furcellatus produced basal and apical proliferations; C. rubrum presented aclear generative potentiality at the nodes and S. nicaeensis emitted abundantproliferations arising from the margins of the fronds. Rhodymenia sp. generatedonly apical proliferations. The results show that the capacity for generatingproliferations is a generalizated process in the algal and it would be very importantsystem in the maintenance of alga populations due to it is an efficient way forgenerating reproductive organs and new fronds.
