Abstract
The taxonomic history of Bascanichthys in the west Atlantic is reviewed. B. scuticar is is redescribed: B. teres is considered a synonym of B. scuticaris; B. bascanium is redescribed and a neotype is designated. B. scuticar is is distinguished from B. bascanium chiefly by preanal vertebral number (79-89 vs 94-101), pectoral-fin width and head length. The ecology and geographic distribution of the two recognized species are discussed; comments are made on their biology and life histories.
