Vertical distribution of plankton in north-western and central parts of the Japan Sea in winter (January-February) and spring (March-April) was considered. 263 samples of mesoplankton were collected in subarctic and subtropic waters by vertical hauls from 1000 m to sea surface in six standard layers by Jedy net with mesh size 0,168 mm. Two 24-hours stations were carried out in subarctic zone. In winter concentrations of zooplankton were maximal in 0-100 m (300-500 mg/m3) and 200-500 m (250-400 mg/m3) layers. In spring concentration of zooplankton was maximal in 0-100 m layer (1000-2000 mg/m3). In spring the plankton biomass in 0-500 m layer increased in 1,5 times in subarctic waters and in 3,6 times-in subtropic waters. Diel migrations of majority species of zooplankton were the most considerable in the upper 100 m layer: average ratio of night-day biomasses was 4:1.
