Abstract
    Analyses of fatty acids in effluents from 3 secondary wastewater treatment plants by gas chromatography of fatty acid methyl esters confirm that the predominant fatty acids ratios in effluents are 16:0, 18:0, and 18:1. The relative abundance of these acids suggests animal fats and vegetable oils as their sources. Concentrations of fatty acids ranged from 0.73 to 43.05 mg/l. Gas chromatographic analyses of hydrocarbons isolated from lipid extracts of effluents by column chromatography and thin layer chromatography indicate that petroleum hydrocarbons are discharged by 2 of the treatment plants studied. Hydrocarbon concentrations ranged from none detected for the effluent of one treatment plant to 16.2 mg/l for the effluent of another. These results confirm suggestions that significant amounts of petroleum hydrocarbons are discharged in effluents.
