Abstract
In this chapter the authors will be concerned mainly with coastal waders (shorebirds), both because these are the species on which most work has been done and because this series of books is concerned with marine animals. However, they refer to noncoastal species where studies on these have helped to answer certain problems raised by the phenomenon of migration. They will concentrate on the western Palearctic migration system, because more information is available from this system than from elsewhere, relating to the general question raised by shorebird migration.
