Abstract
Counting Anseriformes during winter in Norway. After a survey of wildfowl counting in the British Isles, there follows a commentary on the rather few countings carried out in Norway. The members of the Norwegian Ornithologists' Society are being asked to organize the counting of Anseriformes under the auspices and coordination of the Norwegian State Game Research Institute at Vollebekk. In Oslo: During the month of February in the years of 1961-1962-1963 there have within a circumference of 5 km from the Oslo Town Hall been registered approx. 4000 Mallards. The mortality rate among the wintering ducks has been very low and has hardly exceeded that of 1 %. 1. The river Akerselva, Oslo. Fig. 1 shows the lower reaches of the river where approx. 2000 Mallards now winter between the "Nybrua" bridge at the lower end and that of "Treschow" at the upper one. Fig. 2 shows the number of wintering Mallards during the last three years. 2. The Frognerkilen. The author has for a number of years been counting wintering ducks in this bay of the Oslofjord, situated approx. 5 km to the west of the Akerselva estuary. See Fig. 3. 3. The Frognerdammen. In a small lake situated approx. 1 km north of the Frognerkilen some 400-500 Mallards stay the winter every year.
