Abstract
    By data obtained in the last decade and cited data, the main elements of water structure in the western part of the Japan Sea between 39-46 N were considered. They were: convective layer, upper quasi-homogeneous layer, seasonal pycnocline, subsurface temperature minimum, subsurface maximum and intermediate minimum of salinity, intermediate maximum and deep minimum of oxygen content, deep salinity minimum, bottom layer, pelagic and benthic fronts, meso-scale eddies. Their arrangement and properties were determined, the processes of their formation, features of water structure in shelf area, seasonal and year-to-year variability, and possible influence on marine biology were described briefly. Classification of water masses (13) and types of vertical water structure (9) is proposed for the north-western part of the Japan Sea.
