Abstract
Cytology, evolutive cycles and biology of Noctilucidae have allowed to recognize three sub-families which correspond to three evolutive directions : Noctilucinae, Kofoidininae and Leptodiscinae. The first one is characterized by a special hydrostatic system composed of an important accumulation of lipids, system which makes the cellular body globular and turgid. In the others, the flotation is assured by the existence of wing-expansions representing a lateral flattening of the hyposom (Kofoidininae), or an antero-posterior flattening {Leptodiscinae). Several genus compose this last sub-family which is really well adapted to a planctonic life : Cymbodinium which still possesses Gymnodinidae characters, then Scaphodinium, Leptophyllus, Petalodinium and Leptodinium which still show a lateral symetry, at last Craspedotella and Leptodiscus whose morphology is far from a Dinoflagellate morphology.
