Abstract
    The effects of sublethal doses of 3 insecticides on the haematology of the freshwater fish Channa punctatus are described from investigations in the laboratory in Pakistan. All treatments caused a progressive decrease in the erythrocyte count and haemoglobin concentration, and increase in the mean corpuscular haemoglobin, colour index and erythrocyte diameter. Malathion and methyl-parathion increased the nuclear diameter of the erythrocytes after treatment for 24 h, but treatment with these insecticides for 96 h decreased the nuclear diameter. Fenthion (Lebaycid) decreased the nuclear diameter. The ratio of cell size:nuclear size increased in all groups of treated fish. The total leucocyte count fluctuated and exhibited no definable pattern for treatment with malathion and methyl-parathion, but fenthion caused a decrease in the leucocytes. Treatment with all insecticides introduced a new type of leucocyte, which was more like a neutrophil than a lymphocyte or monocyte, and caused a decrease in the percentage of the latter types. Malathion and methyl-parathion reduced the clotting time, but fenthion increased it.
