Abstract
This document briefly describes the exogenous factors affecting the reproductive process of bivalves. It also examines, in depth, the endogenous factors determining the reproductive answer to those environmental variables. Studies on the reproduction control of the pectinid Argopecten purpuratus are summarized. This species, one of the most commercially important molluscs in Chile, has been used by the author for this study due to its reproductive strategy. The author knowledge of spawning control led her to develop a method to eliminate self-fertilization of this pectinid, the most relevant results of which are presented herein. An enhanced hatchery technology is available to farmers for this species and another functional hermaphrodites, which may lead to improved production levels.
