Abstract
This document reviews small-scale aquaculture activities in Chile, with particular reference to the production of bivalve molluscs in terms of employment, particularly in remote areas with limited work opportunities. Contrary to other countries, small-scale aquaculture production in Chile refers primarily to crops sold mainly at the farm-gatelevel, and thereafter processed or handled either for local sales or exports, rather than being used for self-consumption. In spite of the fact that aquaculture development in Chile is mainly based on highly competitive medium- and large-scale enterprises, small-scale aquaculture has a role to play, which, to be sustainable, requires adequate legislation guaranteeing equal access and operation opportunities, plus well structured state-supported plans related to training and other activities.
