Abstract
    The larval development and metamorphosis of hte crab Cyrtograpsus altimanus is described. The larval development consists of five zoeal stages nad one megalopa and is similar to the other species of Varuninae which have been already studied. The zoeae were fed on culatures of the diatom Thalassiosira sp., and Artemia salina nauplii were added from the fourth zoea stage onwards. Mortality was very high during the first and second zoeal stages and in thje megalopa, probably as a result of an inadequate diet and variations in environmental conditions during rearing. The larvae reached the megalopa stage in a minimum of 35 days after hatching, but only 12.27; o/o of the initial number actually reached this stage. The first crab stage was attained in a minimum of 35 days from hatching and only 4.35o/o of the initial number of larvae completed the metamorphosis. This represented a successful moult of 37.03o/o of specimens in the megalopa stage. The characteristics of hte larvae of C. altimanus are compared to those of other larvae of crabs belonging to the subfamily Varuninae. A comparison is given between the larvae of C. altimanus (Varuninae) and those of Chasmagnatus granulata and Metasesarma rebripes (Sesarminae), grapsoid crabs from Argentine seas of which the larval development has already been described. Observations of ecological interst on C. altimanus and C. angulatus, a closely related species, are also included.
