Abstract
As an introduction, the sex products of the sea urchin Psammechinus miliaris are shown and morphologically explained. Using the differential interference-contrast technique, one is able to distinguish the penetration of a sperm into an unfertilized egg that immediately reacts with the raising of the fertilization membrane. With this technique one also succeeded for the first time in demonstrating the migration of both pronuclei towards each other and their following fusion. The developmental sequence from the first cleavage division to the morula, which is typical for the echinoderms, is explained in detail in different takes of the living object as well as with the help of animation (trick shots). The ciliated blastula rotates within the fertilization membrane and rupturing it, proceeds on to a planctonic life phase.
