Abstract
After the hatching of the blastula follows its transformation into the gastrula. The process of gastrulation-the ingrowth of the primary mesenchymal cells, the invagination of the archenteron and the outgrowth of the secondary mesenchymal cells —is demonstrated on immobilized swimming-blastulae. The differential interference-contrast technique is used to show the different stages of the developmental sequence; they will be explained in detail with the help of animation (trick shots) inserts. With this technique one also succeed in documenting by film the formation and growth of the tri-axial skeletal spicule from two small calcit granula. The transformation of the gastrula into first the prism stage and then the pluteus larva is explained and shown with the help of animations (trick shots) as well as on living specimen. The film concludes with the demonstration of a four days old pluteus larva.
