Abstract |
Fifteen trials over a period of 3 years have compared the value of a mixed algal diet of I. galbana Parke and T. suecica (Kylin) Butch with diets of the species individually in the rearing of O. edulis L. larvae. After spatfall a sample of spat from each treatment were grown on together in a common environment to determine the effect of the larval diet on the subsequent growth and survival of the juveniles. The major findings were that larval growth and spat productvity were significantly greater with the mixed diet. A mean spat yield of 40 . 2% obtained with mixed algal feeding compared with 21 . 9% and 18 . 3% with the single species diets of Tetraselmis and Isochrysis respectively. Although spat survival was not influenced in a consistent manner by the different larval feeding treatments, growth was significantly poorer when they were fed with Isochrysis alone. The mixture of the two algal foods apparently provides a better balanced diet. |
