Abstract
A survey is given of the principal characteristics of the diatom flora of the sediments of the Banc d'Arguin, an intertidal seagrass habitat in Mauritania, West Africa. The study was restricted to the autochthonous biocoenosis: allochthons were excluded by identification of intact frustules only. The majority of the taxa identified is widely distributed over the globe. The diatom assemblage is characterized by the absence of freshwater taxa, indicating minimal fluvial or aeolian supply of allochthons. An interesting phenomenon is the absence of several taxa expected to occur in this habitat. A new sp., Nitzschia nienhuisii is described.
