Abstract
    The common shrimp Crangon crangon regulates the chloride concentration in its blood at a value of about 395mE/l. The value is found at a practically identical Cl concentration in the medium at a salinity of 24,9‰. The regulation depends on temperature and is more effective at 21°C than at 5°C. The chloride concentrations in the cells is practically independent of temperature and salinity and maintained at an average value of 79mE/l. Chloride in the blood is less strongly regulated than the other electrolytes. This means that the role of chloride in electrolyte regulation of blood is not of primary importance, as considered by Grimm (1969). The regulation of intracellular non-electrolyte concentration is strongly related to non-chloride electrolytes in the blood.
