Abstract
The author traces the development of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), and its major achievements from its inception in 1902. He then outlines the machinery whereby the annual assessments of the states of stocks are made within ICES, and the means by which information is gathered. The article concludes with a discussion of the revision of the established regulatory systems through NEAFC and ICNAF in the light of the impacts of 200-mile zones.
