Abstract
    (1) In Artemia xanthine dehydrogenase inhibition by 4-hydroxypyrazolo-(3-4d)-pyrimidine induces metabolic disorders leading to various physiological disturbances. These disorders concern excretory and lipid metabolism. (2) Xanthine dehydrogenase inhibition leads to the accumulation of an excretory coloured product in the maxillary gland. (3) Xanthine dehydrogenase inhibition mobilizes the lipid reserves from the phagocytic storage cells. The mobilization of these reserves plays an essential role in the moult cycle. (4) Xanthine dehydrogenase inhibition leads to black disease, the histogenesis and nutritional determinism of which are analogous to Drosophila melanotic tumours.
